Soclul din biografie. Despre câteva feluri eronate de a înfățișa tinerețea regelui Carol I al României
Abstract: (The Plinth in the Biography) The pedestal in the biography: About some erroneous ways of portraying the youth of King Carol I of Romania. One of the common mistakes biographers make is to judge a person's childhood and youth by the deeds, gestures and actions of adulthood. We risk not understanding anything of the first part of a man's life if we decipher it from the perspective of his later achievements. We also find this error in a whole series of biographical studies dedicated to King Carol I of Romania. His biography had a moment of radical turning at the age of 27, in 1866, when he became prince of Romania. Nothing in his life until then had anticipated this, nothing had prepared him. Therefore, to project onto his youth the later monarchical aura is erroneous. On the contrary, his childhood and youth, his training and education, must be understood in their "ingenuity", for they may explain some of the king's later gestures.

Rezumat: Una dintre erorile frecvente pe care le fac autorii de biografii constă în evaluarea copilăriei și tinereții unei persoane în funcție de faptele, gesturile și acțiunile de la maturitate. Riscăm să nu înțelegem nimic din prima parte a vieții unui om, dacă o descifrăm din perspectiva performanțelor ulterioare ale acestuia. Această eroare o aflăm și într-o serie întreagă de studii biografice dedicate regelui Carol I al României. Biografia sa a avut un moment de cotitură radicală la vârste de 27 de ani, în 1866, când a devenit principe al României. Nimic din viața sa de până atunci nu anticipase acest lucru, nimic nu îl pregătise. Prin urmare, a proiecta asupra tinereții sale aura monarhică de mai târziu este eronat. Dimpotriva, copilăria și tinerețea lui, formarea și educația, trebuie înțelese în „ingenuitatea” lor, pentru că ele pot explica unele dintre gesturile regelui de mai târziu.
