„A marmorei candoare” în latină şi în română
Abstract (The “Marble’s Candour” in Latin and Romanian): By reading the works of Latin and Romanian writers, one frequently observes that the white color is suggestively evoked by the use of marble, an element identified by its strikingly bright whiteness. Illustrated in Latin by the nouns marmor, lapis, saxum and the adjective marmoreus(3), and in Romanian by the terms marmură/ marmoră, marmoreu, marmoriu, marmoros, (în)mărmurit etc, the marble is often presented as construction material of grand edifices or of marvelous statues, carved by the skilled chisel of the sculptors or stemmed from some unusual metamorphoses. However, most of the time, the marble, as noun or adjective, it chromatically expresses the theme of the human body, whose beauty is enhanced by this perfect whiteness – characteristic of the face, torso, arms, legs etc, and it is artistically evoked in Latin literature and Romanian as well.

Rezumat: Parcurgând operele scriitorilor latini şi români, constatăm că, extrem de frecvent, culoarea albă se întruchipează sugestiv cu ajutorul marmurei, element recunoscut pentru pregnanţa albului său strălucitor. Reprezentată în latină prin substantivele marmor, lapis, saxum şi prin adjectivul marmoreus(3), iar în limba română prin termenii marmură/ marmoră, marmoreu, marmoriu, marmoros, (în)mărmurit etc., marmura este înfăţişată în numeroase rânduri ca material de construcţie a unor edificii grandioase sau a unor mirabile statui, făurite de dalta măiastră a sculptorilor ori rezultate în urma unor neobişnuite metamorfoze. La fel de frecvent însă, marmura, exprimată substantival sau adjectival, dezvoltă cromatic tema corpului uman, a cărui frumuseţe se nutreşte dintr-o astfel de albeaţă desăvârşită, care este a tenului, a pieptului, a braţelor, a picioarelor etc. şi care este evocată foarte plastic în literatura latină şi în literatura română deopotrivă.
