L’origine du style : crises dans le monde roman selon Leo Spitzer
Abstract (The Origin of Style: Crises in the Romance World According to Leo Spitzer) Known as one of the masters of the discipline that came to be known as stylistics, Spitzer does not always provide us with the origin of what he understands by the notion of style. Our hypothesis is that such a notion depends on a counterpoint often assumed by him but rarely stated–namely, the notion of the classical. This is evident, for instance, in his research as a Romance philologist, where he seeks to understand the history of changes in the Romance languages as the speakers’ attempt to endow the language with its own stable style, in contrast to the stable classicism of the lost Latin system. With regard to the style of literary works, something analogous would occur: an author’s style can manifest either (1) their own struggle with the elements of the universe–a struggle to domesticate them when they present themselves in a chaotic manner–or (2) a profound sense of harmony between the subjectivity that takes the floor and the surrounding world. The aim is to show how these notions, in Spitzer’s texts, stem from his particular appropriation of the tradition in which he is situated: while rooted in Romance philology, he simultaneously draws upon Romantic arguments.

Résumé : Leo Spitzer, éminent romaniste et reconnu comme l’un des fondateurs de ce qui est devenu la stylistique, ne précise pas toujours l’origine de sa compréhension du style. Notre hypothèse est que cette notion repose sur un contrepoint qu’il suppose souvent mais qu’il énonce rarement, à savoir le concept de classique. Cela est particulièrement évident dans ses travaux de philologue romaniste, où il étudie les changements historiques des langues romanes comme les tentatives des locuteurs de doter leur langue d’un style stable, en contraste avec le classicisme fixe du système latin disparu. Concernant le style littéraire, une dynamique analogue apparaît : le style d’un auteur peut révéler soit (1) sa lutte personnelle avec les éléments de l’univers – une lutte pour les domestiquer lorsqu’ils se présentent de manière chaotique –, soit (2) un profond sentiment d’harmonie entre la subjectivité de l’auteur et le monde qui l’entoure. Cet article vise à montrer comment ces concepts dans les écrits de Spitzer émergent de son engagement spécifique avec la tradition intellectuelle dans laquelle il s’inscrit : bien qu’enraciné dans la philologie romane, il s’inspire également de la pensée romantique.
