Dracula și Meșterul Manole: Motivul jertfei pentru creație în piesa B. Stoker și Contele Dracula sau Diavolul englez de Dumitru Radu Popescu
Abstract: This paper analyses a Romanian literary answer to Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula: the play B. Stoker and Count Dracula or the English Devil by D. R. Popescu. This postmodern play is a polyphonic text which describes the torments of the author who sacrifices his life for the sake of the work of art. In the play, the writer Stoker is compared to Mason Manole, a character of a Romanian ballad who sacrificed both his wife’s and his own life in order to build the monastery of Argeș. Bram Stoker and Henry Irving are the main characters of the drama, and the former must write a play about Dracula, which would bring him fame, would create the best role for the actor Henry, and would make the character Dracula immortal. Stoker is caught in the eternal fight between good and evil, and the demonic forces strive to get his soul. The correspondence between D. R. Popescu’s play, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Goethe’s Faust is also discussed, as well as the relationship between Stoker and Irving, as reflected in this Romanian contemporary play.

Rezumat: Lucrarea analizează răspunsul literar al dramaturgului D. R. Popescu la romanul Dracula de Bram Stoker. Drama B. Stoker și Contele Dracula sau Diavolul englez este un text scris în manieră postmodernistă, ce descrie suferinţa autorului care se sacrifică pe sine în actul creaţiei artistice, în piesă sacrificiul romancierului fiind comparat cu jertfa Meşterului Manole. Bram Stoker şi Herny Irving sunt personaje principale ale piesei, iar Stoker trebuie să compună o operă care să îi aducă nemurirea ca scriitor şi să pună în valoare talentul de actor al lui Henry. Pe parcursul actului de creaţie, se dă o luptă între forţele binelui şi cele ale răului, care încearcă să pună stăpânire pe sufletul lui Stoker. Lucrarea propune o paralelă între piesa lui D. R. Popescu, romanul Dracula şi drama Faust de Goethe.
