Poétique de l’exil dans Marx et la poupée de Maryam Madjidi
Abstract (Exile and Identity in Mariam Madjidi’s Marx and the Doll): The present article aims to examine exile and writing in the autobiographical novel Marx and the Doll by the Iranian-born writer Maryam Madjidi, winner of the Prix Goncourt for a first novel in 2017. Divided into three parts—or three “births”—which retrace the key periods in the narrator/author’s life, the narrative follows her quest for identity through experiences of deterritorialization and reterritorialization that contribute to forging multiple, rhizomatic roots, essential to a successful experience of exile. We will focus on Madjidi’s writing through the lens of the spatial, linguistic, and cultural exile that nourishes it. First, we will examine the fragmentary form of this narrative, broken into several genres and languages, which is closely linked to the plurality of the exilic experience. Second, we will consider the role of writing as a strategy for articulating exile and reconciling the narrator/author’s multiple identities.

Résumé : Cet article se propose d’examiner l’exil et l’écriture dans le roman autobiographique Marx et la poupée, de l’écrivaine d’origine iranienne, Maryam Madjidi, lauréate du prix Goncourt du premier roman en 2017. Divisé en trois parties – voire trois «naissances » –, retraçant les périodes marquantes du destin de la narratrice/autrice, le récit suit la quête d’identité de celle-ci à travers des expériences de déterritorialisation et de reterritorialisation, qui contribuent à forger des racines multiples, rhizomiques, garantes d’un exil réussi. Nous nous concentrerons sur l’écriture madjidienne par le biais de l’exil spatial, linguistique et culturel qui la nourrit. Dans un premier temps, nous analyserons la forme fragmentaire de ce récit, morcelé en plusieurs genres et langues, étroitement liée à la pluralité de l’expérience exilique. Dans un second temps, nous nous pencherons sur le rôle de l’activité scripturale comme stratégie permettant de dire l’exil et de réconcilier les identités multiples de la narratrice/autrice.
