Caraş-Severin

Abstract: (Symbolic Meanings of Light in the Winter Habits from the Almaj Valley, Caraş-Severin County) This paper aims to present a few forms of light that can be found in the winter customs from The Valley of Almaj, Caraş-Severin County. We shall mainly discuss the “praznicul” (the day of the host – a holiday that is compulsory for every household in this area), as well as the phenomenon of caroling, i.e. a ceremonial complex which is part of the ritual genre of folklore, genre which includes the poetry of customs (the literary component) and which performs several functions: a wishing function (of predicting and of wishing good health), a dismissal function (of driving evil spirits away), and a protection function (of taming and of asking for protection from the fate). In almost all these cases, the light has positive connotations, underlining the victory of good over evil, the triumph of life over death, and spiritual and material regeneration. Of all the elements associated with the light, we shall refer to the following: the candle (“the light”), the embers, the fire, the star, the decorated Christmas tree, and the sun. One has to notice that the light as a symbol did not appear in the traditional customs at the same time with the large spread of Christianity, but it can be identified even in the pagan period before Christ. Yet, in The Almaj Valley, most of the elements previously mentioned are associated with the practices performed by the Christian religion, and their use in these customs overlaps with a small-scale representation of distinct moments during church rituals.

Keywords: custom, folklore, light, traditional culture, The Almaj Valley.
