Viaje cognitivo: las metaforizaciones conceptuales de la sangre en español
Abstract: (A Cognitive Journey: Conceptual metaphors of blood in Spanish) This paper deals with the metaphorical conceptualisations of ‘blood’ in Spanish and its linguistic representations in the media discourse. After briefly presenting the main concepts of the Theory of conceptual metaphor (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), we analyse the recurrent metaphorical conceptualisations of blood identified in the corpus, namely blood is kinship, blood is life / death, blood is pain, blood is effort, blood is conflict / violence, blood is temperament or passion, blood is material resource, and the variety of lexical, semantic and syntactic means that express them. As we can see, the same concept engenders more possible cognitive metaphors, as each conceptualisation highlights only one aspect of the source concept. Thus, the result is a complex network of metaphors related to each other. Our investigation demonstrates that metaphors are not just a device of the poetic or rhetorical discourse, but a mechanism of the human cognition, reflected in the natural and common language. Moreover, in spite of the systematicity of the image schemas, the underlying metaphor is contextual and culturally dependent.

Resumen: El presente trabajo se propone analizar las conceptualizaciones metafóricas de la ‘sangre’ en español y sus representaciones lingüísticas en el discurso periodístico. Tras presentar someramente la Teoría de la metáfora conceptual (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), investigamos las conceptualizaciones metafóricas de la sangre recurrentes en el corpus, a saber, la sangre es parentesco o linaje, la sangre es vida / muerte, la sangre es dolor, la sangre es esfuerzo, la sangre es conflicto / violencia, la sangre es temperamento o pasión, la sangre es un recurso material, y la variedad de recursos léxicos, semánticos y sintácticos a través de los cuales se expresan. Como se puede notar, el mismo concepto gesta más esquemas metafóricos posibles, puesto que cada metaforización resalta solo un rasgo del concepto fuente y no excluye otras conceptualizaciones. De esta manera, resulta una compleja red de metaforizaciones relacionadas entre sí. Nuestra investigación pone de relieve que la metáfora no es un mero recurso del discurso poético o retórico, sino un mecanismo de la cognición humana, reflejado en el lenguaje natural común. Además, a pesar de la sistematicidad de algunos esquemas, la metáfora subyacente tiene carácter contextual y cultural.
