Terminologia candorii în latină şi în română
Abstract: (Terminology of Candor in Latin and Romanian) The notion of „white” is customarily expressed in Latin by the terms candor „shiny-white color” and candǐdus „bright white” – which derive from *cand- (the Indo- European root-word of fire and white brightness) and are constantly used in poetry to evoke the world of stars, animals, and plants, or to depict the ideal type of feminine beauty. The recognizable symbolism of white justifies also that the two phrases can go beyond the strictly chromatic sphere and receive a figurative value suggesting purity of feelings, the innocence of the soul. This abstract and moral connotation of candor and candǐdus is identifiable in Romanian too, where the neologism candoare (lat. candor) signifies „purity, innocence”, while candid (lat. candǐdus) stands for „pure, innocent”. On the other hand, it must be mentioned also that, in certain contextual uses, the noun candoare and the adjective candid regain their original chromatic signification, as it can be seen in the works of several illustrious Romanian writers.

Rezumat: Noţiunea de „alb” este exprimată curent în limba latină prin candor „culoare alb-strălucitoare” şi candǐdus „alb sclipitor” – termeni care derivă din *cand- (radicalul indo-european al arderii şi al strălucirii albe) şi care sunt folosiţi constant în poezie pentru a evoca lumea astrelor, animalelor şi vegetalelor sau pentru reprezentarea imagistică a tipului ideal de frumuseţe feminină. Simbolistica, bine cunoscută, a albului explică însă şi faptul că cele două vocabule pot să depăşească sfera cromaticii şi să dobândească o valoare figurată, care priveşte puritatea sentimentelor, curăţenia sufletească. Acest semantism abstract, moral al lui candor şi candǐdus este identificabil şi în limba română, unde neologismul candoare (lat. candor) înseamnă „puritate, nevinovăţie”, iar candid (lat. candǐdus) este „pur, nevinovat”. Pe de altă parte, trebuie menţionat şi că, în anumite utilizări contextuale, substantivul candoare şi adjectivul candid îşi recuperează semnificaţia cromatică originară, aşa cum se poate vedea în operele unor iluştri scriitori români.
