Abstract: (Relations between Border Populations and the Institutions of the Roman Empire. The Case of the Limigantes) Populations located at the Danube border of the late Roman Empire showed a high degree of diversity (and instability) both at the ethno-cultural and the institutional level. The careful analysis of the literary sources of the period reveals, in full consonance with the archaeological evidence, that most of these populations were involved in one or another mechanism of integration with the institutions of the Roman Empire, which they extended, by peristatal systems, at great distances beyond the limes. This organisational plan favoured the intensification of the Romanisation process.

Keywords: Roman Empire, limes, institutional integration, Romanisation.
