La civiltà italiana alla luce della cultura europea nella Storia del De Sanctis
Abstract: (The Italian Civilization in the Highlight of the European Culture through the History by De Sanctis) The History of Italian Literature by Francesco De Sanctis can be considered as an overall profile of Italian civilization in its making through the ages, with its intense moments of dramatic development and other setbacks. Very often we find in De Sanctis references to the European cultural framework that serve to better highlight the position, turns, delays, diversions and the intellectual awakening that affected Italy. According to De Sanctis, it is difficult to divide the history of the Italian literature from the European. It is impossible to talk about the Italian culture except in the context of European civilization fruitful by it, and it is impossible to talk about Europe without reference to the Italian cultural events – or because they converge or because they turn away. Our task is to find in the De Sanctis’ masterpiece the relation between Italian and European culture.

Sommario: La Storia della letteratura italiana di Francesco De Sanctis si può considerare come un profilo complessivo della civiltà italiana nel suo farsi attraverso le epoche, con i suoi momenti intensi di sviluppo ed altri di drammatiche involuzioni. Molto spesso si trovano nel De Sanctis riferimenti al quadro culturale europeo che servono ad evidenziare meglio la posizione, le svolte, i ritardi, le deviazioni, i risvegli intellettuali che hanno interessato l’Italia. Secondo il De Sanctis, difficilmente la storia della letteratura italiana si può scindere da quella europea. Non è possibile parlare dell’Italia se non nel contesto della civiltà europea da essa fecondata e non è possibile parlare dell’Europa senza tener presente le vicende culturali italiane, o perché risultano prossime e congeneri o perché invece se ne allontano. Qui si propone una lettura della maggiore opera desanctisiana tesa a mettere in luce il rapporto che l’Italia nel corso della sua storia letteraria è andata man mano intrecciando con la storia culturale europea.
