Abstract: Showing a deep perception of the human soul, which never lets itself explored and revealed with more power and accuracy than in times of danger, the varied work of Tacitus steps out of its narrow socio-political frame. This paper follows the means by which the Roman historian succeeds in rigorously yet very concisely portraying the people's drive and actions and how precisely through this extreme simplicity he so grandly describes the Roman society. History is a our teacher only if we can penetrate the deep meanings of the text. Rigorousness and objectivity, the finesse of descriptions, presence of gestures or, sometimes, absence of these are all trademarks of the writer through which he confirms history's status of magistra vitae.

Rezumat: Învederând o adâncă percepere a sufletului omenesc, care care niciodată nu ni se lasă explorat şi descoperit cu mai mare forţă şi acurateţe decât în vremuri de primejdie, creaţia, variată, a lui Tacitus depăşeşte cadrul său îngust socio- politic. Studiul urmăreşte felul în care opera istoricului roman reuşeşte, cu rigoare şi lapidaritate, să surprindă pe de o parte acţiunile oamenilor şi resorturile acestora şi pe de alta cum tocmai prin această simplitate extremă reuşeşte să contureze cu mare forţă societatea romană. Istoria este dascălul vieţii noastre şi al celor care ne urmează doar dacă avem capacitatea de a pătrunde în înţelesurile de profunzime ale textului. Rigoarea şi obiectivitatea, fineţea descrierilor, a surprinderii gesturilor ori, dimpotrivă, a absenţei acestora sunt mărci ale scriitorului prin care el confirmă statutul istoriei de magistra vitae.
