Moştenit sau împrumutat? Despre originea unor termeni istroromâni
Abstract: (Inherited or borrowed? About the Origin of some Istroromanian Words). The study’s aim is to investigate from an etymological point of view several words from Istroromanian for which there were offered two categories of etymological solutions: some lexicographical sources support the Latin origin, while others consider those words as borrowings from languages with which Istroromanian came into direct or mediated contact. From the variety of existent cases, the study selects only those words for which it is more plausible or, even certain, the solution of Latin origin, not the borrowing theory. In order to justify the preference for the Latin origin theses linguistic and extralinguistic arguments will be advanced.

Rezumat: Studiul îşi propune să investigheze din punct de vedere etimologic o serie de cuvinte din vocabularul dialectului istroromân pentru care în literatura de specialitate s-au oferit două categorii de soluţii etimologice: unele surse lexicografice susţin moştenirea termenilor din latină, pe când altele consideră termenii respectivi împrumuturi din limbi cu care istroromâna a intrat în contact (direct sau mijlocit). Din varietatea cazurilor existente, studiul de faţă selectează exclusiv acele cuvinte istroromâne pentru care este mai plauzibilă sau chiar certă soluţia moştenirii din latină, nu ipoteza împrumutului. Pentru a justifica preferinţa pentru originea latină a termenilor istroromâni analizaţi se aduc argumente de natură lingvistică şi extralingvistică deopotrivă.
