Overlaps and contrasts in the romance-language-speaking world

The 8th edition of the International Colloquium Communication and Culture in Romance Europe will be dedicated to the complex issue of symbioses and specificity present in the Romance-language-speaking world.

The way in which the Latin language, culture and civilisation spread dictated the configuration of some specific features in each province that was once part of the Roman Empire with the transformation of Latinity into Romance. The development and long-term connection of the languages, literatures, art, history and religion have had qualitative leaps; in perceiving and explaining them, scholars have quite often had contradictory beliefs. When taking into account all these specific features, several similarities are to be noted, either due to a common basis or to overlaps and reciprocal influences.

Throughout the entire history of the Romance world, knowledge about and the study of Antiquity (especially the Latin one) have been maintained, in various languages, so that the liberal arts, such as Grammar, Dialectics, Rhetoric, Music etc., were popularized, along with the idea of mimesis, promoted in art by the Romance literatures.

From the entire cultural background of Antiquity, Christian culture borrowed valuable creations, upholding them as models, which were, over the course of time, received and harnessed in Romanised areas. These models and tendencies played a crucial role linguistically, culturally and stylistically speaking. At the same time, apart from imitating these models of perfection, constituted by these works of Antiquity, the self-awareness of Romance cultures as Latin cultures foregrounded models and tendencies which have strongly influenced the remarkable coherence of Romance in the realm of spiritual life.

The Colloquium draws attention to an issue of paramount importance: Romance man, in its complexity, having one side turned towards the past and one modern side, polymorphous and polyvalent. This topic comprises, for example, the dualities Latin/Romance, Classic/Romantic, the literatures of The North/of The South spread throughout from Romantic Germany or from the famous Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes, with lines of evolution full of consequences for the Romantic world and art.

These are only some of the evolutionary afterthoughts from the various areas of the Romance-language-speaking world. All those interested in the topic of the 8th edition of the Colloquium – professors, researchers, PhD candidates –, which comprises the following subtopics, but also in other themes which reflect the symbioses or, on the contrary, the contrasts manifested in the Romance-language-speaking realm are invited to submit communications for one of the sections: Latin Language and Literature, Romanian Language and Literature, Romanian as a Foreign Language, French Language and Literature, Italian Language and Literature, Portuguese Language and Literature, Spanish Language and Literature, Romance Languages Didactics, History and Theology, Music and Theatre, Arts, Book and Library
