Il libro come passione e provocazione per Eco e Borges
Abstract: (The Book as a Passion and Challenge for Eco and Borges). The present work focuses on the two of the most relevant and interesting personalities belonging to the Romance culture of our century: Umberto Eco and Jorge Luis Borges. We think that a comparison between their attitudes towards the book would be very challenging. Umberto Eco has a special admiration for Borges and he implicitly and explicitly mentions him in his writings and admits his influence. Even if the two authors have very different styles, they share the same love for the book and are convinced of its ability to survive in a world that is continuously predicting its end. They both believe in an infinite word that could generate an infinite book, they also share the same obsession and love for the library, for the library as a labyrinth with no escape, they both believe in the immortality of the book in its classical form. Both Borges and Eco have a prodigious memory and are able to invent a sixteenth or eighteenth century manuscript and convince us that it is an original document that has just been retrieved from the dusty shelves of an old one.

Riassunto: Il presente lavoro vuole attirare l’attenzione su due delle personalità dello spazio romanzo più rilevanti e interessanti del nostro secolo: Umberto Eco e Jorge Luis Borges. Riteniamo provocatorio un confronto tra l’atteggiamento che i due autori hanno verso il libro e verso la scrittura. Umberto Eco nomina spesso Borges nei suoi lavori e ammette ogni volta l’influenza che lo scrittore argentino ha avuto su di lui. Apparentemente Eco e Borges appartengono a due mondi diversi, vivono su pianeti diversi, ma li accomuna la passione per il libro, per la biblioteca, la passione per il libro come oggetto di carta, l’ossessione per una parola infinita che potrebbe far nascere un libro infinito, la possibilità, l’idea di una biblioteca-labirinto senza via d’uscita, la passione per la bibliofilia, bibliomania, la speranza e la fiducia nell’immortalità del libro cartaceo e della biblioteca, la fiducia nella “memoria vegetale” di oguno di noi. Tutti e due hanno una memoria prodigiosa e sono capaci di inventare un manoscritto del secolo XVI o XVII e convincerci che lo hanno appena tirato fuori dagli scaffali di una antica biblioteca.
